From the beginning, we knew what we had to do.
We had to get a variance to build Cypress Resort.
A variance is just a fancy real estate term for: special permission to do something slightly different than what land is zoned for, which in our case was Agricultural…
(not that anyone was going to try to grow corn on a 200 foot cliff, but still…)
And we were ready.
Perc tests. Septic layouts. Site plan. Paragraphs on paragraphs describing our project.
And we had a deadline: May 26th, 2023 or we’d have to wait a whole month to start again.
Got it.
May 20th we swung by the Perkins county planning and development office to wrap up a few details.
“By the way, would it be helpful if we run this by our commissioner before we submit it”, I asked as an afterthought– already halfway out the door.
“Yes, it would, but if you don’t ask before you submit you’re not allowed to contact him after you’ve submitted and while you have an open application”
Noted.
Driving through the windy mountain roads to get home, we made the call.
It was brief, pleasant, and our commissioner was gracious and curious.
Little did we know we had just set off a chain reaction that was about to change our entire project.
More on that in tomorrow’s post.
Warmly,
Tanner and Melissa
